Interview Questions Uncovered

Almost everyone is nervous before a job interview. The main reason is a natural fear of powerful people, who will judge you, asking unexpected and difficult questions.

You know more about the questions than you may realise. The skills, knowledge and experience the employer wants have already been described in detail in the job advert, job description and person specification. Moreover, you addressed them in your application and the employer was impressed enough to invite you to an interview. In your preparation, go back over these materials and prepare a STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) example covering your skills and competencies in each area of interest. Use real life examples of things you have done as evidence and reflect on your experience. What could you have done better or differently?

There are more difficult questions. Some of them are open, such as “Why do you want to work for us?” or “What would make you good at this job?”  With this sort of question, make sure that you tailor your answer to the job on offer, talking about the skills and experience (with examples) you have that the employer needs.

There is one question everyone dreads – “What is your greatest weakness?”  Here, you can talk about your learning and development needs. What would make you better at the role?

Finally, there is the off-the-wall question such as “If you were a biscuit, what sort of biscuit would you be?” There is no right answer to this. Employers want to see if you can think logically under pressure. So long as your answer has some clear, justified reasoning behind it you’ll probably do well.

If you want to go into this in more depth there is a webinar on 21st August from 12 to 1 where you can join one of our Careers Advisers online for some expert help.
