Making it big in banking through IT

James Wyche graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in 2011 with a degree in Computer Science. Since graduating he has gone on to work for professional services provider, FDM Group. James is currently placed at Barclays Bank as a Java Developer and shares his experience below.

I have always had a passion for technology since a young age, which led me to study Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. It was during my degree I realised my main interests lied in Java Development. I graduated in November 2011and spent the next few months unsuccessfully applying for jobs due to my lack of previous work experience.

I came across FDM Group at a graduate careers fair. I explained my passion for IT and how much I enjoyed programming in Java. FDM’s Recruiters then explained that FDM has a Technical Learning Pathway that specialises in Development. I decided to apply to FDM’s Graduate Programme. I was invited to attend an assessment day at FDM’s London Academy. I was quite nervous at first as it was my first experience in an office environment, but everyone was very welcoming and I soon felt at ease. FDM assessed me on various tests and interviews throughout the day. The next day I got the all-important phone call to tell me I had been successful and was booked in to start training on the Technical Pathway.

FDM’s training simulated a real working environment, working in an agile environment with scrum meetings in the morning. My training included learning professional skills such as: interview techniques, presentation skills and CV writing as well as the technical training, which included: working on a Java trading platform, UNIX and SQL database training, to name a few. My class was fairly small which meant we had more one-on-one time with the Trainers who were all really helpful and always on-hand to offer advice.

After competing my training, one of FDM’s Account Managers got in contact regarding a possible role with Barclays Bank in Canary Wharf. My interview went really well and I was overjoyed to be placed on-site the next week. I spend my time at Barclays working on software tools written in Java and using SQL to query databases with objects in XML tags within an Excel style GUI interface. My day-to-day role consists of morning meetings, arranging training sessions with our offshore developers and testers, assisting with scrum meetings, setting up meetings with the business users, organising proof of concept designs to the system and getting my ideas implemented. The best aspect of my role is there are always new challenges to overcome.

I can see my career progressing in the finance industry and I am most grateful to the University of Hertfordshire and FDM Group for equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to launch my career in IT.
