Finalist? Don’t miss out on Graduate Schemes

Clock ImageIt’s the new academic year and for some this is the time to be bombarded with messages about courses, programmes, social activities, fairs, catching up with old friends and making new ones. But there’s one message that might be lost to you finalists out there, namely that the recruitment process for some of the graduate schemes you may wish to apply for are already well under way.

Some will have opened their application process, for example Teach First‘s Leadership Development Programme opened on 1st June, and have started to sift and screen applicants. Others, like the Civil Service Fast Stream, have some programmes that have a closing date of mid October. The John Lewis Partnership has recently announced a new graduate scheme with Waitrose which includes a post-graduate level qualification so is likely to be very popular. All of this means you need to be applying now or missing out.

It’s also important to note that, even if there is a while before the closing date or the advert states recruitment is ‘on-going’, it’s still vital that you apply early. Some of these graduate schemes are extremely competitive and a company may close its recruitment early if it receives a large number of applications.

So what can you do? It’s impossible to list all the graduate schemes on here but there are plenty of places to start looking. Search on Milkround, TargetJobs and the Guardian for graduate schemes and start doing your research into the companies you are interested in to be prepared for the application. You can use sites like the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies or TargetJobs’ Employer Insights to do this and also come and visit us in the Careers and Placements Service to get help with your application, interview skills and assessment centre advice. Look out for our new workshop programme on StudyNet.

The Careers and Placements Service will also be hosting the Autumn Careers and Placements Fair which will take place on Wednesday 24th October in the de Havilland Atrium, 11:30 – 15:30. We will be welcoming on campus top employers looking to recruit graduates and placement students for their 2013/14 intake. They represent all sectors including business, creative, engineering, finance, healthcare, IT, law and media, and range from global corporations such as Nissan, Tesco.com, BAE Systems and Xerox, to SME’s (small to medium-sized enterprises) and not-for-profits.
